In 1889, the Territory of New Mexico decided to locate its university in Albuquerque.  Today, that “Pueblo on the Mesa,” with its unique architecture, is the largest university in the state.  Sitting alongside old Route 66 (Central Avenue), it serves over 25,000 students.  A lively area, the UNM district comes complete with a campus corner, fashionable homes and plenty of restaurants. 

The University is a major cultural and entertainment center hosting national and local theatrical productions, the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, and Maxwell Museum of Anthropology as well as sporting events at University Stadium and the world famous Pit.
