Moriarity

In the 1880s, Irishman Michael Timothy Moriarty boarded a train in Iowa bound for California, where he hoped to find relief for his sciatica, but when he got to New Mexico he got off the train and decided to look for a ranch. Trains also brought other settlers, who homesteaded the land and learned about planting and farming pinto beans.  They became so successful at it, the valley became known as the "Pinto Bean Capital of the World.”  However, droughts of the 1940s and 50s forced many farmers to switch to other crops or to ranching.

Moriarty sits just over 30 miles from Albuquerque along Interstate 40 and, while it provides accommodations for cross-country travelers, it also provides a small town, friendly atmosphere for residents, many of whom work in the Duke City but choose to raise their families away from the clamor of a big city.
