Downtown Area
In 1880, the railroad came to Albuquerque, but missed the old Spanish villa of Alburquerque by about two miles, so a New Town began to grow up along the railroad tracks. Today, that area is Downtown Albuquerque and a new Downtown is emerging. Undergoing a multi-million dollar revitalization, Downtown is now home to stylish lofts, restaurants, galleries, trendy boutiques, an entertainment district and Edo, the eastern part of Downtown.
Along Central Avenue (old Route 66), Downtown’s and Albuquerque’s main street, are reminders of the city’s past in buildings like the KiMo Theater and a vision of its future with a look back at the past in the new Alvarado Transportation Center modeled after the Alvarado Hotel which once stood on the same site. The past truly meets the present –Downtown.
